A rare and impressive Staffordshire pottery jug modelled as a chained bear with detachable head holding a baiting dog with open mouth as the spout set with a branch handle and moulded with a sash inscribed 'Bears Grease', well decorated in colours and pink lustre, circa 1820, 295mm high, restoration to bear's head and the chain, Illustrated. * Bear baiting was a popular blood sport in Britain from the middle of the 16th century until it was banned by Parliament in 1835. Bear's grease was a popular remedy from the middle of the 17th century until about the time of the Great War; the theory being that bears owed much of their thick and ample hair to the fat in their bodies and that the resultant grease was the perfect cure for hair loss suffered by humans males.
