For this he was promoted to Lieutenant on 5th November. At the subsequent Battle of Inkerman he was again commended and later awarded the newly created Victoria Cross (gazetted 24th February 1857). This was first presented by Queen Victoria on 26th June 1857 at the ceremony in Hyde Park where Hewett was fifth in that presentation line.
