Jan Carolus van Speijk: a pearlware saucer by Southwick Pottery printed in brown, circa 1835, 121mm. * Born in 1802 van Speijk joined the Royal Netherlands Navy. An opponent of the Belgian Independence Movement his ship was captured in Antwerp harbour on 5th February 1831 whereupon he blew it up with great loss of life including he own to save the ship from falling into hostile hands.
