69.     (Commemorative) Ballooning: a Delft polychrome plate, probably Lambeth, painted with a garden scene and ariel balloon in the sky within a border of swags and feathered rim, circa 1785, 226mm, previously in at least two pieces and restored. * Against the backdrop of society gripped by the flying craze, on 15th September 1784 Vincenzo Lunardi flew, together with a cat and a dog, from the grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company in London to North Mymms and then on to Standon Green End. His initial assent was witnessed by a huge crowd which included statesmen and the Prince of Wales. £250.00-350.00
70.     (Commemorative) Grace Darling: a rare pottery model of Longstone Lighthouse, probably Sunderland, moulded and sponge decorated in colours, circa 1840, 216mm. * Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Islands off the Northumbrian coast was made famous when, on 7th September 1838 Grace, daughter of lighthouse keeper William Darling, spotted the paddle steamer Forfarshire shipwrecked on a nearby island. Together with her father they rowed a 21foot boat through the stormy waters and rescued a number of survivors for which they awarded the Silver Medal for bravery. £100.00-200.00
71.     (Commemorative) 1913 Ewenny: an oval Ewenny Pottery plaque modelled in bold relief with an inscribed portrait of the Reverend Edward Matthews and dated with the centenary of his birth in 1813, the reverse with incised mark, 205mm, glaze chip to cheek £30.00-60.00
72.     (Commemorative anti-slavery slave) A rare creamware teapot with moulded spout and handle painted in rouge-de-fer and black with four lines of verse, on the reverse floral sprays in a palette of rouge-de-fer, aubergine, yellow and black, circa 1770, 103mm, the body cracked, the spout tip and lower handle chipped, lacking cover. * The lines of verse are attributed to Richard Duke from his 1717 poem 'The Review'. See an article in Lapham's Quarterly, Wednesday 28th February 2018 where the author discusses the importance of the tea table in the 18th century drawing room as a forum for political change. An example of this teapot in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is attributed to Wedgwood, exhibit number 1951M180. Josiah Wedgwood himself became a staunch supporter of the ant-slavery movement and Godden records that the earliest of Wedgwood wares were unmarked. Pottery of this type has in the past been attributed to the workshops of Robinson & Rhodes of Leeds however recent excavations in Staffordshire have produced similarly decorated shards. 74.     (Commemorative anti-slavery slave) A rare cornelian intaglio carved with a kneeling figure in profile looking to sinister, inscribed around the border in mirror writing 'Am I not a man & a brother', circa 1825, hairline crack, mounted in pinchbeck as a broach, 16mm high overall. * Shortly after the inaugural meeting of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade held on 22nd May 1787 this image, taken from the Wedgwood medallion, was adopted by the Society as a seal. Here depicted as the medallion looking to sinister but with the script reversed. £500.00-1000.00
75.     (Commemorative anti-slavery slave) A very rare pincushion of circular form embroidered in plum coloured cotton with the profile of a kneeling figure beneath a tree, the reverse inscribed 'Pity the poor slave', tied with a ribbon, circa 1830, 46mm diameter. * The Quaker School at Ackworth has records in its needlework archive of this image and others similar. 78.     (Commemorative anti-slavery slave) A Staffordshire pottery figure modelled as a kneeling figure, hands clasped in prayer, the open book upon his knee inscribed 'Bless God, Thank Britton (sic), me no slave', on a green painted base moulded with broken chains, circa 1834 178mm, some good repainting and restoration to the upper body and feet. * For a similar example of this figure see Victoria & Albert Museum number C.129-2003 £300.00-600.00
79.     (Commemorative anti-slavery slave) A pearlware nursery plate the floral moulded border painted in colours, the centre printed in black with the scene entitled 'He Returns' depicting a teacher greeting a young pupil with attendant footman of colour, dressed in livery, the reverse with impressed crown mark impressed warranted, circa 1834, 196mm. * Depiction of the recently emancipated slave clothed in livery and gainfully employed became a fascination of society following the passing of the anti-slavery act. A good orator he was leader of the anti-slavery movement in the state and leader of the Radical Republicans in the Senate.
